Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has thrown down the gauntlet, rejecting calls for a constitutional referendum and officially announcing his 2027 presidential bid.
Speaking in a fiery end-of-year address themed “The Urgency of Now,” Musyoka accused President Ruto’s administration of using the referendum as a political smokescreen.
“Kenyans do not need a referendum imposed from above. The only referendum that matters is at the ballot box in August 2027,” Musyoka said.
The former Vice President warned that covert moves to amend the Constitution and extend term limits threaten democracy and distract from urgent national challenges, rising taxes, insecurity, and economic hardship.
“The people will speak. Their vote will decide the future of this nation,” he added.
Kalonzo framed his presidential campaign as the voice of a United Opposition coalition, promising to restore respect for the Constitution, end police brutality, reduce punitive taxes, and revive investor confidence.
“Change will not come through fear, manipulation, or political gimmicks. It will come through the vote.
Reject the referendum. Focus on 2027,” he urged Kenyans, especially young voters.
With his early declaration, Musyoka sets the stage for a dramatic showdown at the ballot box, signalling a new era of confrontation and hope for millions seeking leadership change.
