Migori County is gearing up to host the 5th Edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival and Migori Cultural Extravaganza, a vibrant celebration of Luo heritage, from 14th to 16th December 2025.
Speaking during a media briefing in Nairobi, Migori Governor H.E. Ochilo G. Ayacko said preparations are in high gear for a festival that will honor the Luo people’s enduring traditions while promoting unity, creativity, and economic empowerment.
“The basis of doing a cultural extravaganza is to celebrate diversity because Migori is a cosmopolitan county constituted by a diverse population,” said Governor Ayacko.
This year’s theme, “Honoring Heritage, Uniting Generations,” highlights the festival’s goal to bridge traditional values with modern expressions of art, entrepreneurship, and trade.
The 2025 edition will be the first held in the absence of its patron, the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga. “This is the first time we are hosting the Piny Luo Cultural Festival without him. He has been the patron of this festival and of the Luo nation. This edition will be significant because individuals are temporary, but the nation continues,” Governor Ayacko said.
He added that the event would provide an opportunity to reflect on Raila Odinga’s immense contribution nationally and internationally, inspiring both the young and the old.
Beyond the Luo community, the festival will also celebrate the cultural diversity of other groups within Migori, including the Kuria, Luhya, Kisii, and Somali communities.
The event will feature traditional performances, plenary sessions on culture and commerce, a First Lady’s Gala Night, and a boat race on Migori’s scenic waterways.
President William Ruto and other regional leaders are expected to grace the occasion, alongside cultural icons, innovators, and development partners.
“Through the Piny Luo Festival, we are not only preserving culture but also positioning Migori as a vibrant hub for investment and tourism,” said Governor Ayacko.
The festival will also explore how cultural heritage can drive inclusive trade, creative industries, and youth empowerment in line with national and regional development goals.
