The opposition coalition has formally endorsed Wiper Party leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka as its presidential flagbearer for the 2027 General Election, signaling a new wave of political realignment against the ruling party candidate, Kasongo.
Speaking during the launch of Kalonzo’s presidential bid in Kibwezi West, leaders from across the opposition spectrum including former Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, and former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturipledged to rally behind a single candidate to increase the coalition’s chances of unseating the incumbent.
Dr. Matiang’i emphasized the importance of consensus, saying the coalition had reached a common ground that Kalonzo would be the joint flagbearer. “We must stand united behind one candidate if we are to deliver change. Kalonzo Musyoka represents that unity,” he stated.
Aubana Zuambua, a delegate from Kibwezi West, underscored the importance of solidarity within the Eastern bloc, warning leaders who skipped the National Delegates Conference (NDC) that they risk losing political credibility in the region. “Any leader from Eastern who chose not to attend has clearly aligned themselves with Kasongo. The people will not elect them again,” he said.
The Kibwezi West delegation reaffirmed its commitment to Kalonzo, vowing to deliver votes from the region as part of the broader opposition strategy. Zuambua described the endorsement as “a total block vote from the Eastern region for Kalonzo Musyoka,” adding that the coalition’s priority is to “rescue the country from the hands of Kasongo and his associates.”
The endorsement marks one of the strongest signals yet of a unified opposition front heading into the 2027 elections. With Kalonzo now officially backed by key political figures, the stage is set for a heated contest against Kasongo in what is expected to be one of the most competitive presidential races in recent memory.
