Manchester United supporters secured bragging rights over their Arsenal counterparts after a thrilling 3-2 victory in a fan match sponsored by SportPesa at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
The highly anticipated encounter attracted more than 10,000 football enthusiasts, who turned up to witness one of Kenya’s biggest football rivalries played out on local turf. The event brought together supporters, celebrities, entertainers, and football lovers for an afternoon filled with action and entertainment.
Comedian Eric Omondi captained the Manchester United supporters’ side, which featured popular personalities including YY and Mulamwah. Arsenal’s team was led by content creator Useful Idioty, who inspired the Gunners faithful throughout the match.
United started brightly and were rewarded with the opening goal from a well-taken free-kick after early pressure. However, Arsenal responded quickly when Useful Idioty found the net from close range to level the scores and spark celebrations among the Gunners supporters.
The Red Devils supporters regained control and restored their lead through Omondi. Following a flowing attacking move, a rebound fell kindly to the comedian, who calmly slotted home to give his side a 2-1 advantage.
Arsenal had an opportunity to equalise before halftime after being awarded a penalty, but the United goalkeeper produced a crucial save to preserve his team’s lead.
Fans were treated to entertainment during the halftime break as award-winning rapper Khaligraph Jones thrilled the crowd with a lively performance.
The Arsenal supporters returned from the break determined to fight back and were rewarded when a powerful strike from distance beat the United goalkeeper to make it 2-2.
With the contest finely balanced, the decisive moment came with just over 15 minutes remaining. United winger Ras dazzled past defenders before being brought down near the edge of the box. He stepped up and curled a superb free-kick into the net, restoring United’s lead and sending their supporters into wild celebrations.
Manchester United held firm during the closing stages to secure a memorable 3-2 victory and claim the trophy.
SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri, who attended the event and presented medals and the winners’ trophy, congratulated the victorious side while praising the spirit of sportsmanship displayed throughout the day.
“Congratulations to Eric Omondi and the entire Manchester United side for taking the bragging rights today—you earned it. But don’t get too comfortable. A rematch is on the way,” said Karauri.
He added that the event demonstrated the power of sport to bring people together despite fierce rivalries.
“This is what sport does. It doesn’t divide—it unites. It turns rivals into neighbours and strangers into friends, even if only for 90 minutes. I believe in the power of sport to create moments like these. Today was proof.”
Beyond the result, the match highlighted football’s ability to foster unity and camaraderie, as supporters of both clubs shared an unforgettable afternoon of competition, entertainment and friendship.
