AAR Insurance Elevates ESG Commitment with Major Tree-Planting Expansion

AAR Insurance today unveiled a significant escalation of its nationwide tree-planting initiative, pledging to plant over 55,000 trees across Kenya.

This ambitious undertaking, central to the company’s “INTENT” sustainability campaign, underscores AAR Insurance’s profound dedication to environmental stewardship and directly supports Kenya’s national objective of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Building on the demonstrable success of last year’s program, which saw the planting of over 40,000 trees across 18 sites and an estimated carbon sequestration of 7,400 to 9,000 tonnes, this new phase targets a diverse portfolio of locations.

Key planting sites include Lenana School, Ngonyi Primary School in Meru, several Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses (Kisumu, Eldoret, Kakamega, and Nakuru), Town Secondary School in Malindi, Sheikh Khalifa School in Mombasa, and Queen of Rosary Comprehensive School in Thika.

This initiative is a collaborative endeavor, strategically implemented in partnership with Greenspace, KMTC, and local county governments, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering environmental well-being and robust community engagement.

At the core of AAR Insurance’s comprehensive sustainability efforts lies “A Tree, A Life,” a flagship initiative embedded within the INTENT framework. This program operates on a compelling principle: a tree is planted for every insurance policy issued.

This direct correlation transforms each policy into a tangible pledge for a greener future, simultaneously elevating environmental awareness and promoting sustainable livelihoods through strategic alliances with educational institutions, county administrations, and community groups.

Introduced in 2023, the INTENT framework provides a robust and transparent structure for integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into AAR Insurance’s core operational strategy. It ensures that business growth is intrinsically linked to responsible practices, transparency, and measurable environmental impact.

Justine Kosgei, AAR Insurance CEO and Principal Officer, unequivocally affirmed the company’s unwavering commitment to the program. ” ‘A Tree, A Life’ is a living system that profoundly connects people, purpose, and the planet,” Kosgei stated.

“Last year, our trees achieved an impressive 93 percent survival rate, making significant contributions to biodiversity restoration, micro-climate cooling, and the revitalization of riverbanks such as the Gathara River in Nyeri. This ensures long-term care and robust community ownership at each site. Through INTENT, sustainability has been seamlessly integrated into our DNA: it is measurable, transparent, and directly tied to the everyday actions of our valued customers.”

Hosea Kiprop, AAR Group Chief Financial Officer and Sustainability Lead, further illuminated the broader socio-economic dividends of the initiative. “The true power of this initiative emanates from its profound ripple effect; it transcends mere tree planting,” Kiprop noted.

“We are immensely proud to have generated employment opportunities across nurseries and site management, and to have actively engaged students and youth as the next generation of dedicated forest stewards. With INTENT, we provide the necessary structure and rigorous governance: we meticulously monitor every planted tree, assiduously nurture every partnership, and openly share every lesson learned. This methodical approach ensures sustainability with inherent structure, delivering long-term climate action and creating tangible value for our communities.”

AAR Insurance’s expanded tree-planting program serves as a compelling testament to its proactive stance on corporate social responsibility and its unwavering commitment to contributing meaningfully to national afforestation efforts.

The company continues to strategically collaborate with conservation experts, schools, and community partners to scale lasting environmental solutions and cultivate a pervasive culture of shared responsibility for a truly sustainable future.
