  • KSPCA Launches New Branch in Watamu After Mass Rabies Drive; 500 Dogs Vaccinated in August;
 The Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) opened a new branch in Watamu following a mid-August vaccination drive that inoculated more than 500 dogs — a move KSPCA says will strengthen local rabies control in partnership with the Kilifi County Government.

Watamu’s population has significantly grown over the years. With that growth there has been an increased number of stray and abandoned animals, highlighting an urgent need for dedicated local resources to address these challenges.
Emma Ngugi, Executive Officer of KSPCA Nairobi, stated, “The launch of our Watamu branch exemplifies our commitment to enhancing animal welfare on a national level.
We believe that every community deserves access to resources that protect and care for its animals.
With the growing population in Watamu it is vital that we come together to help stray and domesticated animals lead healthier and happier lives.”
One of the most pressing issues that KSPCA Watamu aims to address is the alarming incidence of rabies in the region. Rabies remains a significant public health concern in Kenya, contributing to human deaths annually according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
Vaccination is the most effective means of preventing this fatal disease, yet many pets in the Watamu area lack access to routine vaccinations.
KSPCA Watamu has already held several medical camps this year, including the rabies drive with the Kilifi County Government in mid-August, which saw over 500 dogs vaccinated.
The KSPCA team in Watamu plan to continue with more medical camps in 2026 – including spay and neuter programmes to help manage population growth as well as rabies vaccinations.
“We plan to hold regular medical camps, not only for pets for people in need, but also for stray animals. A community that prioritizes the well-being of animals is likely to attract tourism and enhance its overall image.
KSPCA Watamu’s efforts not only improve the lives of animals but can also lead to economic benefits for local businesses and the community as a whole,” said Tania Harris, the Chairperson of KSPCA Watamu.
KSPCA Watamu joins a network of branches working for the welfare of animals in Naivasha, Nanyuki, Mombasa and the organisation’s headquarters in Nairobi.
